This is a continuation of "The Girl with the Louding Voice". Adunni has been rescued from her job as a housemaid of the cruel woman in Lagos by Tia, an educated and successful Nigerian woman whose mother is dying. Tia has her secrets as her mother forced her to give up a child she had as a teenager.

Adunni is under the care of Tia and is heading for school which makes her extremely happy; however, she has been accused of killing another wife of her husband and must return to her native rural village to undergo some kind of ceremony.

Much of the book is about her experience in this village and Tia's experience seeing the different in the rural areas and her own sophisticated life. The language is the same as the other book with Adunni show more using a form of broken English which at times makes it humorous and other times just awkward.

It seems the purpose of the book is to show the situation of many African girls and the hope of a gradual awkaning into using the "roar" to stand up against the old ways.

I found this to be a very disappointing sequel to The Girl with the Louding Voice. Although it touches on many important issues, it didn't do so in a way that I found either enjoyable or thought-provoking. If it hadn't been a book club book, I'd have been tempted not to finish.
