I had wanted to read a good history of the Russian Revolution, but I really couldn't make it through this one. This work might be considered a "classic," but Pipes' pro-Tsarist ideology is just too much to overcome. The one benefit of reading this book (or at least the first couple of chapters or so) is that I recognized pre-Revolution Russia as the exemplar state for 21st-century American conservatives. I.e., the government elite controls foreign policy and economic policy, and the people live in a libertarian paradise. Not of course that Pipes doesn't find some fault with Tsarist policy--but the only appropriate faults are those he personally objects to, not the ones that the Russian people objected to.
Wonderful but so very sad. A very readable, though still academic, book that gave some excellent insights into the Russian psyche as well as direct history of the country and Communist movement.
