You hear a lot in the horror “community” about Douglas Clegg, as he seems to be very good at marketing himself by any means possible (not a criticism, by the way). This was the first book of his I read, and I liked it. The downside to horror is that most of the writers are male; ergo, most of the protagonists are male. I WOULD like a female protagonist to show up more often, but what can you do? Anyway, the protagonist of this story is a teenager named Jim Hook, who attends Harrow, a prep school for boys that was once a private mansion on the Hudson. It has a nasty history of suicides, and a secret society that soon drags Jim in. He also has some secrets to discover about his father and older show more brother, who also attended Harrow and died in a car accident together when Jim was very young. The atmosphere is appropriately gothic, and I do love a good secret being revealed. There’s a prequel titled Nightmare House online only at Clegg’s website, which I’m going to go check out right now… show less
