The Tom Clancy Companion is a combination biography and dictionary for followers of his works. The biography portion is interesting and takes us through the author's personal life where we are introduced to what motivates him as a writer. A few common myths about his life and writing are debunked as well, and I found this portion of the book to be both facinating and informative.

Once past the 'meat' of the book however, you run into what I would call a 'military dictionary', which might be interesting to those with little knowledge of the subject, although I would not expect to find many like that reading a Tom Clancy novel. There is a connection between the terms and where they appear in his various books, but again, if you are a fan to the point that you purchased the 'Companion', the odds are pretty good that you are already familier with this information.

So although the first part of the book would rate at least 4.5 stars, the latter half is really just filler in my opinion.

The true Tom Clancy fan will certainly enjoy the biography and might even enjoy thumbing through the dictionary portion to brush up on their knowledge, and therefore, I still feel the book rates four stars and of course, it is a 'must have' for the true fan of Clancy's work.
