An extremely good and in many ways chilling alternate history. The author does a very good job of examining the institution of slavery from a social and psychological perspective. The characters are well drawn and interesting.
This is a single volume edition/revision of 3 earlier books: Marching through Georgis, Under the Yoke and The Stone Dogs. The story holds together well even though a significant amount of material from the earlier books has been omitted. The individual books also contain some very interesting material in appendices that gives a better idea of some of the ways in which this universe differs from ours.

He has lived in several countries and currently resides in the United States in New Mexico with his wife. He is probably best known for his Draka series of novels and his more recent time travel/alternate history show more Nantucket series and Emberverse series.
