Miranda "Rannie" Bookman--43, divorced mother of two, with a recent love life consisting of a long string of embarrassingly brief encounters--is beginning to feel like a dangling participle: connected to nothing. Her career as a copyeditor is down the toilet (she makes one little slip--a missing "l" from the last word in the title of the Nancy Drew classic The Secret of the Old Clock--and suddenly she's Publishing Enemy #1!), so she's been forced to take any gig she can get. And that means giving tours at the Chapel School, the ultra-exclusive, ultra-expensive, private academy that her children attend. Certainly not the most interesting of employments . . . at least until someone stumbles across the dead body of the Director of College Admissions. Investigating a murder was never in her job description, but with her soon-to-be-college-bound boy Nate a prime suspect, Rannie has little choice. Besides, who better to dot all the "i"s and cross all the "t"s than a self-proclaimed "language cop"? Her diligence might even lead her to a brand-new love. Or to a killer. Or to another corpse--hopefully not her own.… (more)

When Mr. Tutwiler, the college admissions counsellor, at an exclusive Manhattan school is found dead in his office, from an overdose of a date rape drug, Rannie Bookman, an appropriately-named copyeditor and part-time tour guide at the school, is worried that her son will be accused because he was one of the last people to see Mr. Tut alive. However, one of the English teachers at the school is behaving very strangely.

Very entertaining and enjoyable mystery. I think I would query some of Rannie's grammatical judgements on the people round her and some of the sex scenes could be trimmed a bit, not because of a sudden onset of prudishness but simply because they are just not very interesting and don't really add to the story. But these are minor blemishes and I'm moving on to the sequel straight away. ( )

I didn't like this book much, though I did read to the end. It was really slow. There were a lot of extraneous graphic sex scenes, & a "red-flag" sort of love interest who's usually angry about something. The protagonist is always fussing about people's language. That makes the clunkers all the funnier--my fav was "cat-shaped eyes". I doubt I'll read another of this author's books. ( )

Decent plot but not the best-written book. Disgraced copy editor's son is accused of murdering the director of the private school he attends. Using her skills as an editor to "dot all the 'i's and cross all the 't's", mom sets out to find the killer. I suppose the sex scenes were meant to keep us reading a book that is actually riddled with copy-editing errors. Ironic, no? ( )

Excellent book! Mystery is well constructed and the characters are likable and real. Highly recommended. ( )

Ironic, in a book about a copy editor, to find so many copy-editing errors. ( )
