It’s my opinion that every kid’s library should have at least one Amelia Bedelia book, and this one was a particular favorite of mine growing up. In this book, the literal-minded Amelia tries her hand at babysitting and, as usual, misinterprets a number of her instructions. However, baby is safe and well at the end, and Amelia soothes all ruffled feathers with her excellent baking skills. Lynn Sweat’s illustrations, simple as they are, never fail to delight. I could be wrong, but it seems that Amelia Bedelia is one of those rare characters that transcend “boys’ books” and “girls’ books.”
I love the humor in Amelia Bedelia books. I think it is good for kids to be exposed to what happens when you literally do what someone asks, and you didn't understand the directions. These books allow for great opportunities to discuss vocabulary words with several different means. A great resource for ELL students.
Amelia Bedelia says, "I don't know a thing about babies," so she has her hands full when she takes care of Mrs. Lane's baby. As usual, everyone's favorite quirky housekeeper mixes things up, but she also wins the heart of her newest and youngest fan.
Although Amelia has never babysat before, she gets left with a list of instructions and an infant. Hilarity ensues as she takes the instructions literally. The baby is fine, but the mother is beside herself when she returns!
Amelia Bedelia and the Baby by Peggy Parish is one of the stories from the Amelia Bedelia series in which Amelia babysits her friend's baby. The story is a very funny one because Amelia Bedelia gets very confused about her friend's instructions and does not act like a normal babysitter. This is a great book for beginning readers because it is simple enough but harder than a regular picture book. This transition book does include colorful pictures to go along with the text, which is great for young readers. It is a book that children will enjoy reading because it will make them laugh at Amelia Bedelia's crazy way of thinking.

I have always loved Amelia Bedeilia books and I believe this is a great book to read to children before bed. It is always fun to laugh with your child and watching her babysitting adventures is nothing but hilarious. I like that Peggy Parish uses illustrations to help capture all of Amelia's mishaps. Definitely a great read.

This would also be a great book to use in the classroom because of its humor. If it seems that all your kids are in a bad or cranky mood that day, you can liven it up with this babysitting adventure from Amelia Bedilia!

Peggy Parish was born in Manning, South Carolina on July 14, 1927. She attended the University of South Carolina and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. While visiting her brother in Kentucky, Parish was persuaded to enter the teaching profession. After teaching creative dancing to young children, she moved to Oklahoma and taught third show more grade in the Panhandle, in addition to teaching dance and producing community shows. Parish's first book, My Golden Book of Manners, was published in 1961, followed by Let's Be Indians in 1962. A parent of one of the students, who was an editor of adult books, found out she was trying to break into the writing field and introduced her to an editor at Harper who helped improve her skills as a storyteller. This, of course, led to her biggest breakthrough, the creation of Amelia Bedelia in 1963. Parish eventually wrote 11 more Amelia Bedelia books as well as a number of mystery novels, and arts and crafts books. Among these other titles are Haunted House, Dinosaur Time, The Chimp That Went to School and Let's Celebrate: Holiday Decorations You Can Make. In addition to writing books, Parish did television pieces on preschool education and children's books, wrote book review columns and led a number of in-service training workshops for teachers. Parish died of an aneurysm on November 19, 1988. Her nephew, Herman Parish, continues to recreate new titles in the Amelia Bedelia series. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
