Happy Wife by Meredith Lavender and Kendall Shores is a 2025 Bantam publication.

Nora’s life seems like a real-life fairytale. Her life is a rags- to- riches story, with a real Prince Charming, and a happy ever after. But after the whirlwind romance and marriage, reality appears to set in. Will is a prominent attorney who lives in the affluent community of Willow Park. Unfortunately, the Willow Park society has not welcomed Nora into their ranks, and Will’s ex-wife is determined to undermine her at every turn.

Though Nora doesn’t feel accepted in his world, she finds solace in a neighbor, a friendship that deepens as Will’s long hours on a big case create a distance between them. This growing disconnect exposes a few cracks in show more their perfect marriage right before Will vanishes.

At first, I was skeptical. A younger woman marrying an older, affluent man, and then becoming the obvious prime suspect when the man disappears, is not terribly original. I found myself surprised by how easily I was hooked, though.

What makes this such an entertaining story is the atmosphere. Nora is an entertaining storyteller. She slowly gains your trust as she searches for the truth about Will. Her discourse on the underbelly of fabulous wealth is sassy and a little satirical while painting a searing indictment on the wealth, power and social dynamics of the ultra-rich.

Ultimately, this is a basic whodunit, Nora’s engaging voice elevates it, along with her underdog status. Her fight against a system stacked against her, combined with witty dialogue, builds suspense and makes for an entertaining read.
Overall, a solid mystery, light, but with dark undertones, some occasional dark humor, and maybe a bit of a cautionary tale thrown in for good measure. I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would.

3.5

*Content: Nora’s use of foul language didn’t seem to fit her character. I found it unnecessary, as it didn’t add context and was distracting to the story.

After celebrating his birthday, Nora and Will are headed to bed, when Will receives a phone call from his daughter, Mia, asking him to get her sweatshirt from the boat dock. Will never returned.
An investigation into Will's disappearance ensues, and while Nora is not initially a suspect, the community wealthy has never fully accepted her. After some poor choices, Nora starts hearing bad press about herself, but she is determined to find out what happened.
As more info comes to light, Nora realizes that all is not what it seemed with Will's friends and law practice, and show more that he was keeping a large secret from her.
A juicy beach read. Not a surprising ending.

Nora Davies is an outsider. At least to those who live in the overly-affluent community of Winter Park, Florida. Then she has the audacity to marry the Golden Boy—Will Somerset—handsome, successful lawyer, most-eligible batchelor, old money, you get the picture. But things get worse. Will disappears the night Nora throws an over-the-top party for his forty-sixth birthday. Nora is a little slow to involve the police, to avoid a messy and likely unnecessary scandal, which makes her the primary suspect. And kicks off the rumors and gossip and condemnations Winter Park has mastered. From there, things get even more muddy. A great cast of characters, a deep dive into the social hierarchy of the affluent, and a plot that will keep you show more guessing to the end make this story a true winner. Highly recommended.

Nora Davies falls in love with a handsome high powered lawyer and she is the second wife with number one skulking around. The idyllic marriage starts to fray as he is absent with so much work to do. She is forgiving but the trouble continues when he goes missing and she turns detective bent on finding out what happened to (Will) the love of her life. Lots of twists and turns as she tries to rebuild her life and find the culprit.
*3.5 rounded to 4*
This was a quick, easy read featuring the elite, parties, secrets, and murder. While not all together thrilling and suspenseful and lacking that "shock value," this was still an entertaining read.
