No real surprises here. When the book starts with the sentence, "The morning I died it rained," you know it's not going to be a joyful story. Little Lori Jean has a compelling voice and is a sweet and optimistic child, who nevertheless falls victim to a cycle of family violence. The most hopeful thing about the book is the promise of an afterlife, since Lori Jean is telling her story from beyond the grave. And even though her life ends tragically, there are many moments of beauty, friendship, and love in her short years.

Lori Jean, a 10-year-old from rural 1950s Georgia, shares the most crucial two years of her life. Unfortunately, Lori Jean is dead - she tells her story from the heavens.

Wow. This was tough to get through at times. Lori Jean was an adorable, insightful, yet innocent, strong, little girl that brings you into her world - hook, line and sinker. Unfortunately, her world was not a pleasant one. The turmoil in her life didn't prevent Lori Jean from being a delight to know; she will not be forgotten anytime soon. She lived out many messages that will remain in my heart.

This is J. L. Miles first novel - the idea was prompted by a real life event. (4.25/5)

This was at times a difficult book to read. Told from the point of view of a 10 year old murdered child I think you can understand why. I had a range of emotions reading this book, (sadness, anger, hope and laughter). I feel the writer did a very good job writing the speech pattern for Lori Jean and the things that would interest a 10 year old. I found it to be a very human story. In the real world murder happens, abuse happens. It is never pretty and too often overlooked. It is indeed a powerful book.
Well written novel. Although a very sad story it did have it's lighthearted moments in seeing life's complications and adult's behavior through the eyes of a child. The author balanced this nicely. The ending was particularly well done and original.

This book is narrated by 10 year old Lori Jean, who from the beginning of the novel is deceased. Lori Jean takes the reader through her young life....specifically the last two years of her life. Lori Jean's life is filled with tragedy, hardship and cruelty...the things no child should witness or experience and yet, Lori Jean keeps us from tears and we are found smiling at Lori Jean's spunk and wisdom.
Rose flower Creek is written in the voice of 10 year old Lori Jean, growing up in an abusive home in rural Georgia. From the first page we know that Lori Jean dies young, and in the short time we know her in this book, she experiences many losses. She comes across as a real little girl, someone I could have known as a child. I loved this book and I highly recommend it.
RABCK from hostile17; Haunting story told in the voice of a poor 10 year old Georgia girl. The story starts out with her killing, then looks back over her hopelessy bad childhood, that she uses MeeMaw's wisdom to justify.
