I thought “Everybody Bakes Bread” by Norah Pooley was an interesting book. I liked the fact that the author introduces the young girl narrator, showing her bothering her mother who’s attempting to make bread of her own, and has her go in search of a three legged rolling pin for her mother to use as a device to introduce all the multicultural neighbors the girl meets. As the girl visits different neighbors including her Jewish neighbor who helps her to figure out her mother’s intentional trick, she sees each neighbor making bread distinct to their culture, which I thought was a great metaphor for our multicultural society. I thought the illustrations of this book were somewhat flat and did not find them very interesting. Overall show more the author does a good job of giving examples of how cultures are very different but have the same essential values through the metaphor of baking bread. show less
