I’ve followed this world since the Rockton series, and while I’ll admit a few past mysteries started to feel slightly predictable, **not this one**. This installment pulled me right back in. Thoughts: I really enjoyed this continuation of the Haven's Rock series. The mystery is well done, and it was great to see how the new sanctuary town of Haven't Rock is progressing. I am a big fan of Armstrong and have read the majority of her other series and enjoyed them. I would recommend reading the Rockton series before reading this one because there is quite a bit of background there that ties in with this story. However, this whole series does stand alone fine on its own.

In this book, Casey and Eric are juggling being new parents while ensuring that Haven's Rock runs smoothly. The autumn is in full swing and they are show more surprised when they stumble upon a couple of lost hikers. This makes them both a bit paranoid about why the hikers were really out in the middle of the Yukon forest this late in the year. When one of the hikers is found dead the next day, their worry deepens. Exposure is always a danger, and Haven's Rock has already been dealing with a group of nearby miners, not to mention rumors about possible spies from Rockton.

This story is another wonderful blend of survival elements, combined with a good mysterious police procedural. We get some closure around the mystery of the nearby mining company and also get some insight into what has been happening at Rockton since Casey and Eric left there.

I really enjoyed watching Casey and Eric move onto a new stage of life with their young daughter. Many people seem to want their new baby to be a liability, but instead, they are approaching this new stage of life in a way that brings the people of Haven's Rock closer together.

This was a quick and easy read that was fast paced, kept you guessing, and well written. I can't wait to see what the fifth, and final, book of the series holds.

My Summary (5/5): Overall I really enjoyed this book and thought it did a wonderful job of progressing the story. I really enjoyed the police procedural and survival elements to this story. I also enjoyed seeing Casey and Eric enter a new stage of their lives together. I am eager to see what happens in the final book in the series. I would recommend to Rockton fans, or to those who think survival combined with a good murder mystery sounds intriguing. show less

Looking for a chilling and thrilling read? Then this could well be the book for you.

Having set up an off-grid sanctuary town, deep in the Yukon Territory, Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, embrace the responsibility of Haven's Rock's security. While out on a hike with their six-month old daughter, they encounter a pair of unknown hikers, one of whom appears to have been injured. It's rare for outsiders to wander into their space and are viewed rather suspiciously. When there's a death on the trail, all spidey senses are in hyper alert. It doesn't help that there's also a mining camp nearby which adds all sorts of challenges. Casey and Eric are on the case and hopefully can get to the bottom of the matter show more before Haven's Rock is compromised or someone else meets their demise.

Author Kelley Armstrong does a superb job of setting the scene and steadily building the tension of this thrilling read. The character development is solid and perpetrator possibilities are many. The woodsy setting is richly incorporated into the scenes' writing. Life in grizzly land is raw and wild. Survival is certainly not guaranteed. But Haven's Rock's community takes care of its own. Although this was the fourth book in series, I never felt asea. It easily stands on its own. However, I guess I've got some catching up to do.

The First Sign of Danger is a great addition to the Haven’s Rock series, itself a spinoff from the Rockton series. The addition of a new baby for the series leads, Casey and Eric, adds a great complication to the usual twists and turns of these heart-pounding thrillers set in the Yukon. It’s great to see the growth between Casey and Eric as they develop into parenthood.
The plot in this one seemed a bit more convoluted than usual but it kept me guessing throughout. The wild setting makes for great cat and mouse encounters with both the good and not so good players in the area. One of my favorite side characters, Lilith and her wolf Nero, had more page time in this installment which had me cheering.
As always, Kelley Armstrong tells show more an engaging story in a fantastic setting. I’ll be so sad to see this series end after the next book.

Well this book kept me guessing from the first to the last -- so many red herrings, so many "are they connected?" moments. Great to spend time with Casey and Dalton and see how the team functions with a 6 month old in the mix. Fast-paced and nonstop (as usual) and I love the interesting developments that occur. Feels like the series is resolving, and I like the hard fought wins along the way.

The fourth book in the Haven's Rock series begins with a couple of hikers getting too close to their new secret community. Casey and Eric are hiking with their baby Rory when the come upon hikers who are well off the beaten path and hiking at an odd time of the year.

When one of the hikers is killed and carried off by a grizzly, Casey and Eric need to find out who they were and why they were hiking where they were. They suspect that their other neighbors who are supposed to be gold mining might have some association with the deaths.

Missing hikers, a grizzly, a buried body, and a mysterious mining camp cause Casey to be pulled in lots of directions as she tries to discover what is going on and if their new settlement is safe. This was an show more enjoyable mystery with lots of twists and turns. show less

The self-sufficient community hidden in the Yukon wilderness was a great place, settled by people seeking refuge and a peaceful life. I loved the beauty of the wilderness and show more the community, despite the dangers of bears and strangers who lurked around every corner.

Two smart, devoted dogs added even more depth to the story. The characters were cleverly crafted for the mystery, and the action kept me is suspense. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery. show less
