Description
"The best of When Harry Met Sally, Normal People, and Lady Bird all wrapped up in a vintage button-down and sprinkled with Midwestern charm." —Joanna Goddard, Cup of JoThe debut novel from beloved writer Erika Veurink, this is a deeply personal and propulsive romance laced with humor, heat, and high-octane yearning. Perfect for fans of You, Again, One Day, and People We Meet on Vacation.
After a postgraduation drive from Iowa City to NYC, Teddy and Marin have both had enough of each show more other to last the rest of their lives. But that doesn't stop their paths from crossing over eight rocky years, punctuated by chance encounters and transatlantic visits, on a journey that eventually brings them right back to where it all started.
"You are going to stay up way past your bedtime devouring this novella." —Molly Prentiss, author of Tuesday Nights in 1980 and Old Flame
"Erika Veurink pulls off a fun, charming read with just enough scandalous young-people behavior to remind you that we are all a mess and that falling in love is a journey that's well worth the adventure and the many detours." —Aminatou Sow, coauthor of the NYT bestseller Big Friendship
"I've already read it twice." —Caro Claire Burke, author of the forthcoming Yesteryear. Humor (Fiction.) Fiction. Romance. show less

Teddy and Marin travel to New York together after graduation at the behest of Marin's best friend, Sloan. Marin's long-term goal is to live in New York and make a life there, eventually bringing her sister there to live with her. Teddy's is to return to Iowa and live next door to his best friend, Carter. And this road trip is meant to be a one-time deal, but it ends up being life-changing - despite the fact that Marin and Teddy don't see each other again for years.
A blurb on the front cover mentions comps to When Harry Met Sally, which I've never watched, and Normal People, which I hated, so that probably should've been a heads up to myself that this particular off-again, on-again romance would not be my jam. I found Teddy and Marin show more both incredibly annoying, didn't believe their love story AT ALL (there was so much more time they were apart than together? What are they building their pining on?), and only finished it because by the time I realized I wouldn't find it satisfying, I only had about 50 pages left and it's a novella. A third act "why we can't be together" is one of my least-favorite romance tropes, and that was basically the whole story until the end when they are... well, equally thrown together in basically the first road trip in reverse. From what I understand, there were many references to When Harry Met Sally that I know I didn't get. It's possible that would've made it a little more enjoyable for me, but mostly I was wondering what on earth they actually had to base this relationship on. show less

This was a quick read but I just hate these unrealistic love stories. I was okay until the section when Marin finds out Teddy “lied” to her. Just ridiculous!
