An innovative book that made me think about style and all the possibilities inherent in one story. Provocative and entertaining, it is well worth reading. ( )

99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style by Matt Madden (2005)
  cdp02005 | Aug 4, 2009 |
This is a take-off on Raymond Queneau's "Exercises in Style", one of the great inventive pieces of writing of the 20th century, Madden tells the same story or vignette in repeated form, most of them in a cartoon form. In the middle of the book are colored plates with such titles as "A Newly Discovered Fragment of the Bayeux Tapestry" and "Exorcise in Style." Like its precursor, one can enjoy rereading the various ways of expressing the vignette and wonder if I could ever be that supple with writing or images. ( )
