Due to a local disaster, the Chalet School temporarily adopts about forty extra girls from another local school. Rivalries inevitably begin, not helped at all by one of the new staff who is rather self-important. The story then follows school lessons and life, including some winter sports and - for a slight variation - a few incidents with cats.

The later books rather lose out without the strong and intuitive personalities of Jo Maynard and Mary-Lou. Focus in this one is mainly on the younger girls and their feud, which makes for some interesting storylines, but none of the girls from either school stand out.

I’m sure I must have read this book as a teenager, and probably at least once in the intervening years, but I have no memory of it at all. So while it wasn’t anything special, it made a pleasant enough light read for a few evenings. ( )

This book deals with the aftermath of a school nearby the Chalet School burning down, and the girls of that school being forced to join in the traditions and customs of the Chalet School. Another fairly episodic book, the main themes are about acceptance, and basically the fact that the Chalet school is full of 'Good Eggs'

Like the first Chalet School book, this book explained the customs and traditions of the school and therefore was easier to read and understand. I felt like there was sometimes a little too much preaching about how great the Chalet School is, but that's to be expected, I guess. Basically a good read for reading while walking to the shops.

First words
If Miss Holroyd had never decided to move her school; if some careless idiot had not tossed a smouldering cigarette-end on to the grass that was dry as tinder; if Miriam Ashley had been a person of humbler mind and less obstinacy; if, above all, the Middles hadn't been like most Middles, young demons when roused, this story would not have been written.
