Description

Like no other nation on earth, Americans eagerly blend their religion and sports. This book traces this dynamic relationship from the Puritan condemnation of games as sinful in the seventeenth century to the near deification of athletic contests in our own day.

A thorough look at the history of sports and religion in the U.S. The title made me think it would be a bit more sociological and contemporary rather than historical. I also hoped that the book would be a bit more thematic rather than what ended up as a recitation of facts at times. Still, it was worthwhile.
