Description

The Sweet Side of Little Rock is the story of how candy was first introduced to the city of Little Rock a short time after the Civil War. It is also the story of the people responsible for developing the confectioners' trade in Arkansas: most notably, three German immigrants- Fred Rossner, Andrew Karcher, and William Schmand- who pioneered the art of candy making in Little Rock into a thriving business. The Sweet Side of Little Rock takes the reader through a history of the town from the show more 1870s to the 1950s. It brings back a gentler, slower Little Rock- before interstate highways, before the Arkansas River bridge was built, before the malls, when downtown was the place to have a business. The Schmand candy store and ice cream parlor on Eighth Street was an integral part of the Little Rock landscape during the early 1900s. Del Schmand grew up amid this "sweet side of Little Rock" and conveys both its history and its nostalgia in this book. show less
