A medieval monk investigates murders at an abbey.

Great atmosphere and production, awful story (despite a promising premise). It's almost worth seeing once for the library labyrinth sequence, but, on second thought, since nothing that happens in this movie ends up mattering, you could just watch that scene on its own without missing anything.

A well-written and beautifully paced mystery novel set in a totally unique setting - a monastery in the middle ages.

Excellent movie a murder mystery movie, the story takes place in a 14th century monastery and the plot between the deaths that occur and its similarities with the book of revelation.
Sherlock Holmes meets Inquisition. A monk investigates murders in a monastery. Set in Italy in the Middle Ages.
The Name of the Rose is definitely not a mystery novel. It is an historical fiction with different layers and deeper meanings embedded into each layer. It is an intellectual exercise which at times may seem like an incessant toil. It is a baffling assortment of ideas on literature, logic, theology, the meaning of knowledge, and many more things that I probably missed or failed to understand. The name of the film comes from the last lines of the book, "Stat rosa pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus" ("Yesterday's rose endures in its name, we hold empty names"). It is set in an Italian monastery during the Middle Ages. In it a Franciscan monk William of Baskerville sets out to solve a set of mysterious deaths at the abbey. A Benedictine show more novice called Adso acts as his assistant and also as the narrator of the story. The library of the abbey plays a central role. Almost all of the mysteries revolve around one particular room at the library called Finis Africae. And the complex network of power, lies and greed that seem to stem from it and above all the mysterious finis Africae makes the library all the more sinister and irresistible. show less
