This is the first book in a science fiction series that I hope will be longer than three books. Ms. Wine does a wonderful job of world building with this first book. There are some slow spots but they are in the interest of getting reader up to speed about what is going on and why.
The main characters are the Alcandians and an earth woman that becomes their mate. The Alcandians are short on woman and have come to Earth to try to find mates. They approach the government with a choice to either allow them to search for mates or be invade and the search would happen anyway. As always there are elements that think that we can fight off any force no matter how advanced their civilization. I think someone has been watching a too many episodes show more of Stargate. The first two Alcandians are Dylan and Jett. From what I can discern these two are typical males for this society. They are warriors and alpha males. They are big, well trained and more than a little drool worthy. They are honorable and tough. I liked them and some of the secondary characters that are also introduced in this book. Because there is a shortage of woman on Alcandar it is expect and accepted that each grouping will be one woman and two or more men.
The first female that is taken to Alcandar under the new treaty is Jessica Somerton. She accidentally meets Dyaln when she goes to her cabin in the mountains of California. Her brother Cole has brought the men there because of the remote location. Dylan and Jessica’s first meeting is a little on the rough side mostly because she is unexpected and the men are warriors. Jessica is a virgin and she has stayed that way because she wanted to save herself for her husband. She has dated and done some heavy petting and necking but she has never felt compelled to go any farther. Jessica is a smart, extremely independent woman that has made it in the world on her own. She is unhappy with her love life but she keeps hoping to find Mr. Right. Her problem is that she isn’t willing to acknowledge that Mr. Right is really Misters Right.
While this doesn’t have to polish that some of Ms. Wine’s later books have it is a good story and it does make you want to read the next book in the series. There are a number of interesting characters in the book and there is a cliff hanger of sorts. I hate cliff hangers. Luckily the next book is available on my reader so I don’t have to wait to find out what happens next. show less

This was a very interesting story full of twists and turns. It starts out on Earth and moves to the planet Alcandor. There is intrigue, suspense, menage, and a story line.
The first time I tried to read this I couldn't get into it...strictly because of the cover. I kept thinking a slimely looking rat boys being the hero...and well that was a MAJOR turn off. When I finally got over it and was able to get into the book it wasn't bad. It was far from great, but it worked.
