I suppose this would have been useful pre-internet for collectors, but this is the least comprehensive guide I've come across yet. It has 50 plates, with two examples to a plate, so, although it claims to illustrate a majority of US patterns between 1847 and 1901, it only skims the surface with 100 patterns.

These are photos and the quality is good. Most other guides have line drawings, not photos.
