This book gives a fictional glimpse into what living on Easter Island during the time when the mysterious and famous moai were carved. The story tells of a day when a tsunami hits the island and how a moai sculptor and his family fare through this natural disaster. This story would be appropriate for 2-4 grade classes who are learning about the world around them and civilizations of different times. The central issues addressed in this book is geography, family and faith.
Young Pico plays among the stone statues, or moai, on Easter Island. When a tsunami hits, do the stone statues walk and rescue Pico? Notes at the end share about the mysterious island whose culture seemed to disappear and who left behind mammoth stone statues. Illustrated by William Low.

Born Thomas Archibald Barron in 1952, author T. A. Barron grew up in Colorado's "ranch country". He graduated from Princeton University and also attended Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Before writing, Barron had a successful career as a venture capitalist manager in New York City. In 1989, Barron became a full time writer and conservationist. Many of show more his books incorporate nature and ecological concern into their themes, garnering him two Nautilus Visionary Book Awards in 2005 and 2007. He has also received International Reading Association and American Library Association awards for his works. He resides in Colorado with his wife, Currie and their children. show less
