Description
"Using letters, diaries, and memoirs, Metcalfe distills the personalities, viewpoints, and day-to-day reactions of five alert and often directly involved witnesses to Hitler's consolidation of power. They are: U.S. Ambassador to Germany, William Dodd, and his high-spirited daughter, Martha; Bella Fromm, a glamorous German society columnist who was Jewish and made no secret of it; Ernest Hanfstaengl, Hitler's somewhat buffoonish foreign-press chief; and Rudolf Diels, the first head of the show more Gestapo." -Publishers Weekly show lessTags

Basically the tale of the Nazi consolidation of power, covering January of 1933 to June 30, 1934. The background to the Night of the Long Knives, using diaries, memoirs and diplomatic notes as background. Fascinating and well done.
The gathering storm didn't run on time; nothing was foreordained. We know what happened such that future events cast their shadows behind them, but even the NSDAP had to come to grips with the levers of power.
