Description
With cover and interior illustrations by Phil Foglio! The Great G The Trophy is just about the ugliest piece of "art" that apprentice magician Skeeve has ever seen, but the beautiful Tananda wants to steal it for a special occasion. Skeeve's not above indulging in a daring act of interdimensional thievery for a good cause and the chance of adventure, and he figures that between his abilities and Tanda's, the guardians of the Trophy won't stand a chance. That's where their plan goes horribly show more wrong. The Trophy is the sacred object of an ancient contention, the Great Game between two rival nations, and it's closely guarded by professional magicians. Tananda is caught in the act of attempting to steal it, and Skeeve must escape to seek help to free her. To effect a rescue, Skeeve must recruit a team of his own to play the Game, taking on both opposing teams simultaneously-and he's got to win! It will take all of Skeeve's unproven magical talents and the devious mind of his scaley green mentor, Aahz, plus everything his strange crew of recruits can offer to beat the professionals at their own Game. Present D "That's it," she said with sudden, impish glee. "That's what?" I blinked. "Aahz's birthday present," she proclaimed. I peered down the street, wondering what she was looking at. "What is?" I asked. "That statue," she said firmly. "That statue?" I cried, unable to hide my horror. "Of course," she nodded, "it's perfect. Aahz will have never seen one, much less owned one." "How do you figure that?" I pressed. "It's obviously one-of-a-kind," she explained. "I mean, who could make something like that twice?" She had me there, but I wasn't about to give up the fight. "There's just one little problem. I'm no expert on psychology, but if that pack we just saw is any decent sample, I don't think the folks around here are going to be willing to sell us their pretty statue." "Of course not, silly," she laughed, turning to her food again. "That's what makes it priceless. I never planned to buy Aahz's present." "But if it isn't for sale, how do we get it?" I frowned, fearing the answer. Tananda choked suddenly on her food. It took me a moment to realize she was laughing. "Oh, Skeeve," she gasped at last, "you're such a kidder." "I am?" I blinked. "Sure," she insisted, looking deep into my eyes. "Why do you think it was so important for you to come along on this trip? I mean, you've always said you wanted to be a thief.". show lessTags

Why isn’t Robert Lynn Asprin’s name usually mentioned in conversations about sci-fi-fantasy humor? I have always enjoyed his punny, satirical brand of snark, but I have to admit it is often uneven. Few of his epigraphic puns are as good as Terry Pratchett’s “It contained the hoho, which was like a haha only deeper. A haha is a concealed ditch and wall designed to allow landowners to look out across rolling vistas without getting cattle and inconvenient poor people wandering across the lawns.” Fun though it is, his multiverse, with its assorted demons and dragons, lacks the genius of Discworld. He would doubtless have been better known without the inconvenient hiatus in his career in the 1990s.

Funny book in the Myth series, this one's a take on sports as Aahz, Skeeve and some of their friends from the first two books take on the cities of Ta-Hoe and Veygus to rescue Tananda. Along the way we meet trolls and trollops and a pervert or prevect. First published in 1982 some of the quotes used as chapter headers may be lost on younger readers, from semi famous people of the day like Doug Hemming, Howard Cosell, but there still entertaining puns.
"As any magician will tell you-Myth Directions is the secret of a successful steal." -D. HEMMING
"Old heroes never die; they reappear in sequels" M. MOORCOCK
"War may be Hell. .. but it's good for business!" -THE ASSOCIATION FOR MERCHANTS, MANUFACTURERS, AND MORTICIANS
"-Or was it unlock the show more safe then swim to the surface?" -H. HOUDINI
I miss Bob Asprin he died much too young, if you enjoy a silly fantasy now and again this may be just the book for you. show less

Skeeve is bored; Aahz is grouchy; and Tanda wants to "shop". Such is the life of Asprin’s demons, short for dimension travelers. Fortunately, the trophy Tanda has decided to steal soon has everyone hopping, and again trying just to stay alive, even though someone else beats her to the theft! To save Tanda’s life, Skeeve’s band must, with the help of a few new friends, win the hideously ugly Big Game’s trophy. The full contact nature of the Big Game is to American football as a contented kitten is to a starving lioness. With some misdirection, magic, minor rule breaking, and as always loyalty to one’s mates, yet another caper is successful. Fans of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, and Neil Gaiman will feel right at home show more cavorting with Skeeve’s merry band of misfits.

This makes for a quick fun read. One never knows what to expect. This would be a great introduction to genre. At the same time, I am sure fans of this genre would get enjoyment out of it too. I feel that it appeals to the teen, but also with to the well read.
I enjoy the conversations, the puns, and the outrageous situations they all get into and getting to know the characters. I am enjoying growing along with the characters as they mature.
This series has been a pleasure to read. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

This is an extremely entertaining and fast paced book. The story jumps from one adventure to another without any fluff or letdown. The writing is witty. I can't wait to read the next one.
Another adventure where Skeeve, Aahz, and Tananda get more then they bargained for. Tananda takes Skeeve on a shopping trip through the dimensions until she finally settles on a Trophy that is probably the ugliest thing Skeeve had ever seen. However finding the trophy was the easy part getting a hold of it is an entirely different mater. Skeeve and the gang get roped into playing some contact sports to try and get a trophy that only an insane person would want. As with the other Myth Adventure books this one was a quick read that does nothing special but fun none the less and is good for a few laughs.
I have always enjoyed fantasy novels and I have a fond place in my heart for campy pun filled fantasy and Robert Asprin definitely writes books that fit the bill. His books remain good although they do not quite stand up to the test of time.

Robert Lynn Asprin was born June 28, 1946 in St. Johns, Michigan to Daniel and Lorraine Asprin. Asprin attended the University of Michigan from 1964-65. In 1965, Robert served in the U.S. Army until mid-1966. Asprin then began a career as an accountant, moving up to cost accountant in a small subsidiary of the Xerox Corporation in Ann Arbor in show more 1976. In 1975, Asprin began working upon a science-fiction novel called Cold Cash War. Asprin sold this idea to St. Martin's Press and soon found himself a published writer. When other publishers approached him for a second novel, Asprin revealed that he had written up a draft of a comedy-fantasy work originally entitled The Demon and I, but they felt that he shouldn't stray far from the science-fiction of his first work. So Asprin began work on The Bug Wars. While working on The Bug Wars, Asprin was approached by Donning Publishing, and asked if he had a submission for their new publishing house, Starblaze. Asprin showed them The Demon and I, which Donning quickly accepted. At the last minute the title was changed to the familiar Another Fine Myth, which became quite popular. With that, Asprin quit his job and started his career as a fulltime freelance writer. Asprin wrote and edited over 50 books. He died of a myocardial infarction at home in his bed on May 22, 2008.
