How often have I lamented that characters are too stupid to live, that they keep making the same mistakes? Frequently.
I had no cause for those lamentations reading Bereket. The characters think, plan, and act intelligently to realize their goals—though those goals are set by some drives beyond reason. And very little that could go wrong does.
Perhaps too much so. This is not a short book, and the narrative lingers on working to prevent things from going wrong and isn't as punchy as a series of narrow escapes and surprises. To not seem arbitrary, the smooth outcomes have to be built carefully, but the architecture isn't very dramatic.
I did enjoy learning about the character Bereket, though I'm not convinced by him.
One third of the show more book is about the Ugaro warrior Siga inTemara who offered himself as tuyo in Nikoles. Siga is necessarily very earnest, and I found him much harder to vibe with than other Ugaro characters in the series.
This is a good, if less involving read than other books in the Tuyo series.
