Originally published in 1942, Look to the Mountain by LeGrand Cannon is a great tale about the American pioneering experience. In 1769 young Whit Livingston and his new bride, Melissa leave the village of Kettleford, New Hampshire to homestead a hundred miles further north. They are the first people to settle in this new area and through hard work and perseverance the young couple turn their portion of the wilderness into a self-sufficient farm. They go on to have children and to welcome and assist newcomers who arrive to also put down roots.
In such a way we learn how Colonial America expanded and was settled. But this is more than a history, the author did not neglect the story either. There the excitement in the danger that the young show more couple must overcome as well as the opposition to their young love. I thoroughly enjoyed this pre-revolutionary pioneer New England story. show less

A New England forest dweller has very Fenimore Cooper style adventures and wins his true love. Not particularly memorable.
