I've been wanting to read this series for a while now.....it was worth the wait. This follows the trials of Kenneth "Killer" McCoy as he progresses from a Marine corporal in China spying on Japanese occupation to a commissioned lieutenant in D.C. during the time right before the invasion of Pearl Harbor in 1941. Along the way he makes friends, mistakes, and meets a few women. A hard-nosed look at the Marine Corps during WWII, and I am looking forward to the next few in this series.
So happy to be reading this again for 2013. It's one of my favorite series. Not just for the Marine Corp details, or the rich history, but because I love each of the characters. McCoy, Pick, Ernie...I can't choose a favorite. Book one starts prior to the US entry into WW II with the Marines stationed in China and ends with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Welcome to World War II, boys. It's going to be a hell of a ride.
Griffin is a master storyteller. He grabs your interest from the first page and never let's go. His characters are real and you come to love the heroes and hate the villains. This is at least the fourth time I have started reading the series. I highly recommend you become acquainted with this author. You will not be disappointed.
Looks like another great series of books in the mold of the "Brotherhood" US Army books. Our hero is a mustang, commissioned in a strange way; he has a love interest not from his station in life and a good buddy of the same ilk who plays polo. The characters are marvelous, even if they seem to repeat, repeat, repeat. Well read, Dick Hill. And, in the end, the book just ends without fanfare. If I'd not just run out of time on the audio book, it could just continue. Wait! I think it will continue in book 2 :-/
Not my usual fare, but interesting nonetheless. Dad was a career Marine and I grew up around MCRD (Recruit Depot) in San Diego. Marines are near and dear to my heart. So I took a chance and borrowed the book. It was the story of one paticular soldier, though it traced his story across the lives and careers of other soldiers. It focused on Shanhai and the "China Marines". It's a part of jarhead history that I didn't know about. Worth the read.
These books belonged to my dad. Mom gave them to me after he passed several years ago. I have a strong interest in history, particularly military history. These books are an interesting jaunt through the WWII years. I have read the entire Corps series and half the Honor Bound series and have enjoyed them all.
