Originally published in German as Vom kleinen Maulwurf, der wissen wollte, wer ihm auf den Kopf gemacht hat (literally, "Of the Little Mole Who Wanted to Know Who Did It On His Head"), and translated into English as The Story of the Little Mole Who Went in Search of Whodunit, this hilarious tale of scatological hi-jinks has now been made into a pop-up - or rather, a "plop-up" - edition, and released under this slightly different title, The Story of the Little Mole Who Knew It Was None of His Business. This book convulsed a small gaggle of my (adult) co-workers, who gathered around for an impromptu story-hour, and left still giggling helplessly. What can I say...? Apparently Werner Holzwarth knows how to communicate with our inner show more six-year-olds.
When a little mole sticks his head out of his hole, a sausage-shaped turd lands on his head, setting off an unusual quest, as he goes in search of the one who did their business in such an inconsiderate fashion. From hares to cows, the mole questions his fellow creatures, seeing a defecatory demonstration from each, until finally - with the aid of some flies - he discovers the culprit! Hysterical enough when simply a picture-book, this story becomes even more entertaining as a pop-up, as little (or big) turds move around the page. Younger readers, with their insatiable appetite for potty humor - think Everyone Poops, Walter the Farting Dog, The Adventures of Captain Underpants - will be particularly amused! show less

Was having a conversation at work while simultaneously flipping through the book and it took me about ten minutes to realize, oh, this is all about poo.
The mole, by the way, is a little scamp. If I ever got the nerve to use this for a gross-out storytime, I feel like I'd need to have a brief conversation with the kids to firmly establish that no, it's not acceptable behavior for us human beings to poo on someone's head out of pure spite. (Also, the mole is not a human being, and neither is the dog, so technically, they might poo in places where we humans should not. JUST FYI, KIDS.)
Apart from that, this book is hilarious.

Oh my gosh. I laughed so hard at this picture book. When little mole sticks his head out of the ground, someone poops on him. He goes around to all his friends to find out who done it. Each animal acquits himself by showing how he poops. Yes it is crass, but it is so funny too. I can't think of a little boy who wouldn't just love this story.
The Story of The Little Mole Who Went In Search of Whodunit is the delightful tail of a mole that searches for the culprit who inconsiderately dropped poop on blind Little Mole’s head. With the poop on his head, Little Mole determinedly finds different animals and waits for them to prove their innocence by pooping either droplets, plops, balls, or other varieties of poop. The illustrator uses a variety of geometrical shapes, sizes, sharp textures, and shades of brown to distinguish the different animal poop. Two full pages are designated to close up imagery of the animal and the feces they create. The straightforward and comical story leaves readers laughing out loud learning about varieties of animal poop while exploring the meaning show more of justice and retaliation. This short story is highly recommended to readers of all ages searching for a hilarious story about integrity and humorous retaliation. show less
This book was absolutely inappropriate but extremely hilarious. I could not believe I was actually reading a book about poop, with a little mole walking around with poop on his head, trying to figure out "whodunit". The book originated in Germany and was banned here in the United States.
The Mole goes around asking various animals who pooped on his head. To say the mole was ticked off would be an understatement. After all, he was walking around with poop on his head and he wanted to find out who did it! All of the animals denied pooping on the mole's head, and to prove it they give the mole a sample of their poop. Finally the mole found out who did it, and to retaliate he pooped on their head.

I liked this book because the readers could guess, assume, and read along with the repetitive stanza. I enjoyed that in the end, the mole solved his mystery. The resolution was that the dog pooped on the moles head and then the mole got revenge by returning the same deed. I also liked how the pages were informational in the way that the illustrations accurately express the different shapes and sizes of animal droppings according to that animal, this teachers readers a little bit about the animals. I thought this book was humorous, which I enjoyed. The answers of each animal "I do it like this" made me, as the reader, laugh.
The message of this picture book could be revenge. This is because the mole is on a mission to find out who or what show more had made a dropping on his head. Although, I don't think that this was a positive message because the mole turned around and did his own business on the dog in return. It sends a mixed message to readers because some children, you never know, might take this literally and think it is acceptable. show less
