Dave Warner (not the Australian cricketer) first came to attention as a musician who had a moderate hit with the song "Suburban Boy". I don't recall ever hearing it, but apparently it sold some records.

Fast forward to the 1990s and Warner became a published writer with "City of Light", a detective novel set in Perth. At times, Warner's lack of experience as a writer shows, with some parts overwritten and overwrought but it overall, one can see how "City of Light" received plaudits and wards on its debut.

An interesting aspect of "City of Light" is having the lead character Snowy Lane play Australian rules football in the local professional league, where he mentions his success or otherwise as a player and name checks some famous players. Lane is also a police man who gets involved in a serial killer case which he is unable to solve, and one likes how Warner is able to weave the two strains together. ( )
