Golden writes from both a marxist and foucauldian perspective in a style that would be readable to any of her "subjects." She indicts a system that penalizes the poor and the addicted--especially if they are not white--throws away their children and does little to offer anyone hope, help or comfort from the social oppression of a society that is neither free nor fair. Excellent beginning reading for anyone interested in the contemporary prison system and its race-based disparities. ( ) no reviews | add a review
In this timely book, renowned criminologist and activist Renny Golden sheds light on the women behind bars and the 350,000 children they leave behind. In exposing the fastest growing prison population-a direct result of Reagan's War on Drugs-Golden sets up new framework for thinking about how to address the situation of mothers in prison, the risks and needs of their children and the implications of current judicial policies.
