Description
Offering an extraordinary window on centuries of dialogue between the Bible and literature, this superb, unprecedented, and award-winning reference work is designed to help the modern reader understand how biblical motifs, concepts, names, quotations and allusions have been transmitted through exegetical tradition and used by authors of English literature from the Middle Ages to the present. The book includes several hundred encyclopedic articles (more than a million words) written by a show more distinguished international roster of more than 160 contributors representing the disciplines of biblical studies, theology, patristics, and literary studies. show lessTags

This book is surprisingly fun to read more as a book than a reference tool. The range of literature cited is broad, including both well known and little known works. As a reference tool, however, I found the entries of varying quality, with some entries more developed and others less so. Too often, I wished it were more comprehensive when I was searching a particular topic. The organization within the entries is sound, and is an excellent model for examining the stream of ideas through time. Multiple bibliographies are contained at the end, for those wishing for literary sources about the Bible from a literary point of view.
