Description

Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (1853-84) is considered by many to have been the most intelligent and probably the most interesting of Queen Victoria's four sons. He was the youngest and a strong-willed, attractive character, with an immense thirst for life. He was also, however, the first royal haemophiliac and suffered continual ill health: he was also an epileptic.

A wonderful look at the life of one of history's forgotten princes. Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, was the only one of Queen Victoria's children to suffer from hemophilia. As such, he was closely guarded by his mother and it was with great misgivings that he was allowed to do all that he did. Leopold was supposed to live the life of an invalid. However, he was not afraid to fight his mother's will. He went to Oxford, cultivated friendships with people such as John Ruskin and Charles Dodgson (real name of Lewis Carroll, who penned Alice in Wonderland), and eventually married and had a family.

Leopold's all too brief life is chronicled here with eloquence. Zeepvat brings us closer to understanding a man crippled by illness, yet full of life.
