The back of beyond

A well-researched story about the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Australia. Unfortunately, it's also a romance, and is therefore riddled with soap-opera cliches, but the background detail balances out the hormonal private life of the 'feisty' heroine (and she is actually labelled as such, thrice over).

The afterword by author Barbara Bickmore records that the medical emergencies fictionalised in her book are all based on real-life events, which not only makes at least half of the book realistic, but also testifies to the incredible service carried out by the RFDS. A fascinating, evocative, occasionally gruesome, often silly, but entirely enjoyable flying visit with the docs (and I even cared enough about one of the characters to be show more pleased with the romantic ending!) Nooit meer zal zij haar hart laten breken door een man - dat weet dokter Cassandra Clarke heel zeker. Op de vlucht voor haar herinneringen na een ongelukkige liefde, is Cassie teruggekeerd naar haar geboorteland Australië. Daar wil ze haar moed en deskundigheid bewijzen als eerste vrouwelijke arts van de Australische 'Flying Doctor Service'.
Maar Cassie krijgt het moeilijk in deze harde mannenwereld. Alleen bij de charmante piloot Sam vindt zij begrip. Samen met hem vliegt Cassie door de uitgestrekte Australische wildernis om riskante spoedoperaties te verrichten bij haar patiënten.

Toch blijft Sam alleen maar een goede vriend voor Cassie. Hulpeloos moet hij toezien hoe zij zich laat verleiden door de rijke schapenfokker Blake Thompson, show more die haar vervolgens in het ongeluk stort. Want ook Blake breekt Cassies hart - door te trouwen met haar beste vriendin.

Cassie reageert door zich halsoverkop in een ongeschikt huwelijk te storten met collega Chris. Zij wil zich de kans om ooit nog kinderen te krijgen niet laten ontnemen. Dan krijgt Chris een auto-ongeluk show less
