This was a great read. Obviously, some selections were more engaging than others. However, the editor did a fine job in creating this compilation. There were many events that I learned of for the first time. Many more events that I gained a deeper understanding of- they were given voice and dimension. Highly recommend this book. I read this book straight through. I may have savored it more if I had treated it as a coffee table book. Picking up to select a letter in spare moments. However, I am very satisfied with this book.
I personally loved this book. It's nice to be able to read first hand accounts of history and this book has plenty of them. Everything from religion, immigration, westward expansion, slavery, war and more is contained. Not only are there letters from and to famous people, but there are some from ordinary citizens who had no part in history other then to be witness to certain events. This compilation also helped change my mind about certain areas of history. A must read.
