A wonderful book for the beginning gardener (ornamental plants, not vegies), which briefly covers almost every topic of interest about decorative plants, gardening and landscape design and the history of gardening. The writing is a pleasure to read. There are other books which go into much more depth on particular aspects of gardening, but this one is the most comprehensive introduction I'm aware of.
