The First Duty of Women. A Series of Articles Reprinted from the Victoria Magazine. 1865 to 1870. by Mary Taylor
CurrerBell Contrast Fuller's wordy and confusing stream of purple prose (combining Emersonian Transcendentalism with Graeco-Oriental mysticism) with Taylor's well-crafted arguments (a quarter century later), presented in succinct articles, arguing that women must first and foremost earn money and become financially self-supporting to avoid dependence on men and on family. (Mary Taylor, incidentally, was a lifelong friend from boarding-school years of Charlotte Brontë and the major influence on CB's traveling to Brussels to study French.)

DNF at...I dunno, like 20%? I just can’t. Half of it is either Greek mythological stories told in the most boring way, or poetry written in another language. The actual content of her own was dense and difficult to understand. If it wasn’t for a class, I would never have picked this up willingly....
