She also witnesses the inpact of Surian politics on the lives of ordinary people. A unique insight into the complexities of the Arab world.

Na de Golfoorlog reist Lieve Joris naar haar vriendin in Syrië. Toen zij elkaar twaalf jaar geleden ontmoetten, hadden ze dezelfde dromen, maar algauw raakte Hala verstrikt in een web van politieke problemen en werd zij teruggeworpen op haar familie. Maandenlang deelt Lieve Joris Hala's leven in een Damasceense volkswijk. Heerlijk boek waarin LIeve Joris je meeneemt naar het leven in het Midden-Oosten.
