A 1984 book, amounting to an expedition through six hill tribes of the 'golden triangle' northern Thailand - the Karen, the Hmong, the Mien, the Lahu, the Akha, and the Lisu. The photographs give an intimate look into their domestic and ritual lives, their landscapes, and their arts and crafts. The last, especially, is a great feature of the book, as the authors and the photographers have assembled the best and most representative of their opulent personasl jewellery, their fabrics and dresses, and accessories like head-dresses, bags, and so on. One aspect that is relatively un-represented, however, is a history of their political struggles. One facet that comes through clearly, however, is the differences in what could be termed their collective, or tribal, personalities and temperament: some highly competitive and possessive, others desiring above all harmony and blessings.
