I built a cabin in the middle of nowhere, Alaska and had some serious encounters with bears. I bought this book at the time, hoping it would give me some information that might help me from being mauled to death. The book contains mostly common sense suggestions, and to be honest I found a healthy dose of paranoia, a 12 guage loaded with copper slugs and an SKS Chinese assault rifle to be more reassuring.
This was a particularly interesting book in that a true expert (the author) backs off from sensationalizing bear attacks and instead focuses on the facts that he has gathered from the available primary and secondary sources.
This book is not only interesting, it could save your life. A must read for anyone who wants to venture into the pockets of true wilderness which still remain.
The 'What do you do when you encounter a bear?' decision tree is truly complex.
This is the book that Bill Bryson read "saucer-eyed" before setting off on the Appalachian Trail in "A Walk in the Woods."
