Joan Mueller's method of enhancing the facts of Francis's life with vivid descriptions and dramatic dialogues will help readers visualize Francis the man. They might even hear him singing his wonderful songs. They will enjoy living for a while with this sensitive friar and his explosive Bernardone family and his many faithful friends. They will be able to feel what it meant to be citizens of Assisi in the Middle Ages. At the same time, this historical novel might even convince them--at least while they are reading--of the reality of the amazing events of his life, like the miracles and the stigmata. Mueller knows the facts and knows how to shape them into a delightful fiction. (Amazon reviewer)

The strength of Joan Mueller's novel is its close adherence to the historical realities of the medieval world. --Murray Bodo, O.F.M.
