Abt Walafried Strabo van het klooster Reichenau beschrijft in een beroemd gedicht uit de negende eeuw zijn kloostertuintje. In deze eerste Nederlandse vertaling, die verschijnt ter gelegenheid van het 75-jarig jubileum van de Kruidentuin in het Openlucht Museum Arnhem, komt Walafried's tekst in eerste instantie tot zijn recht als een poëtisch kunstwerk. De vertaling is in vijfvoetige jamben, en behoudt daarmee de essentie van de Latijnse regels, zonder aan dichterlijke kracht in te boeten. Vanzelfsprekend vindt de lezer ook alle denkbare plantkundige toelichtingen, verzorgd door deskundigen van het Openlucht Museum in Arnhem.
