Rachel Parker, Kindergarten Show-Off

This story is about a girl in a kindergarten class that does everything right and gets all of the attention. When a new student comes into the class and does everything right as well, the competition between the girls arises. The girls have to then learn how they can work together instead of competing to be teacher's pet.

This is one of those books that you make your parents read over and over because as a child you are intrigued by how bad the girls are in this story, yet your parents on the other hand realize that they are implicitly teaching you how to NOT act. Instead of reading a book to a group of students with a list of rules that the characters follow, this book does the exact opposite. It shows me as a teacher that I don't have show more to explain things directly, but instead can use other ways to convey the rules. Olivia is an African American 5 year old girl, who has a new neighboor named Rachel Parker. Olivia and Rachel go to the same school, are in the same class, and are both very competitive. They show off each of their talents, but at the expense of hurting each others feelings. This is a great read aloud for kindergarteners because it is relateable and teaches about jealousy.

This is a good book for teaching mutual respect between two students. It's not a terribly long book, and it's a little bit funny at the same time that it's showing how the two girls learn to get along.

This book teaches about friendship and how important it is. It teaches two girls who comes from different families that their opposites and similarities are what makes them best friends. It allows for students to see that being mean won't allow for frinenships.
