On the Frontiers

The previous two volumes in this series saw Galaxity, the organisation for which Valerian and Laureline work, wiped out of history, and now the pair are trapped on 1980s Earth. The frontiers in the title refer to those on our planet. The story opens with Valerian helping the Soviets to determine the cause of a nuclear accident – it’s sabotage, but it’s not clear who was responsible, or why they did it. The story then abruptly shifts to a galactic space liner, and a pair of aliens who wear golden armour. There are apparently so few of the Wûûm left, that a meeting between them is exceedingly rare… and so leads to a shipboard romance. Except the male Wûûm is really a human, and he kills the woman and steals her psychic power show more so he can use it to kick off a nuclear war on Earth, by, for example, sabotaging nuclear power plants, and so bring about the creation of Galaxity earlier than in now-disappeared timeline. I’ve said all along the Valerian and Laureline series is superior space opera, but it’s also a clever commentary on the world at the time of publishing. It’s easy enough to deride France’s tradition of science fiction as bandes dessinée – they’re comics! – but many of them are a damn sight more intelligent than actual written-words novels published at that time in the US. Pierre Christin es uno de los guionistas más reputados de la bande dessinée de los años 70 y 80, gracias sobre todo a sus trabajos con Enki Bilal (Las falanges del orden negro, Partida de caza, etc.) y Jean-Claude Mézières (la serie Valerian).

Sin embargo, casi todos sus guiones para las aventuras del agente espacio-temporal y su compañera Laureline -repletos de grandes hallazgos y la siempre deslumbrante imaginación visual de Mézières- se ven lastrados por un final precipitado y simplón.

A veces Christin parece prestar más atención a subrayar con trazo grueso la tesis que pretende sustentar el relato que a agotar las posiblidades abiertas para personajes y trama. Los inicios siempre interesantes y prometedores de cada show more aventura no consiguen culminar un buen final.

"Fronteras cósmicas" es un buen emblema de esta característica. Sus 18 primeras planchas componen el relato casi elegiaco: una estirpe de príncipes que, como últimos mohicanos de su raza, recorren el cosmos buscando mitigar su soledad. Un prólogo trágico de gran belleza que merecería un desarrollo mayor (tal vez incluso otro álbum) en la trama posterior. Pero, una vez más, la historia se precipita en las últimas planchas para alcanzar un desenlace banal. show less

En rumtidsagent ved navn Jal forsøger at genskabe Galaxity ved at gentage den atomkatastrofe, som blev afværget i Spøgelset fra Inverloch. Linda og Valentin forsøger at forhindre det og opsøger igen Shingouz'erne.

Tegneserien har en meget åben slutning, hvilket jeg egentlig godt kan lide
