A Kiss to Remember

An endearing romance of Sterling Harlow, a notorious duke who falls off his horse and hits his head while en route to one of his smaller estates. He gets amnesia (another amnesia romance!) and is talked into believing he's engaged to Laura Fairleigh, a rector's daughter who his mother had befriended and took him before her death. Laura, an orphan with her siblings is presently living in the house where he lived with his parents before he was fostered off to become the heir to the dukedom of which he now. I really loved the way this story developed, and I couldn't put it down in the second half when Sterling regains his memory and the sh*t hits the fan! I have a love/hate relationship with anmesia and mistaken identity stories. On one level, the whole "being someone else" thing appeals to me, but the deception required doesn't. So I liked this story, but couldn't quite love it - even though it was (I a little embarrassed to admit) the amnesia that made me choose this particular book.

If well done - and I'm still a little on the fence about that in this case - the characters should have good reasons for beginning and/or carrying on the deception. That doesn't mean there won't be trouble when the truth comes out, but with time there can be understanding as well.

Laura's course of action is a little extreme, but plausible within the context of the story. The delevloping romance between her show more and "Nicholas" is nice and the revelation of his true identity well done.

Sterling's fury at being deceived is entirely reasonable and seeing them eventually working it all out was nice to read.

I think part of the problem is that Medeiros had to fit two romances in a single, relatively short novel. Both of them are between the hero and heroine, but they are quite different as they first fall in love as Laura and Nicholas, and then have to reconnect and do it all again as Laura and Sterling (and then Diana and Thane steal a bit of the story time as well).

Some of the thematic resolution was beautiful. Laura tells Sterling that Nicholas was the man he might have been if his life had been different, which was a lovely way to look at the two incarnations of the man, as I don't believe you can fail to be true to your fundamental self, even if you don't remember who that is. With his emotional baggage taken away, Sterling had a time to find that fundamental self.

His apology to Laura for making her his wife and treating her like his mistress was a lovely realisation for him to have - and something a few more romance heroes could do with figuring out.

All in all, an enjoyable read. I'll certainly be happy to read Medeiros again. show less

Já conhecendo o trabalho da autora há algum tempo, sempre me tinha questionado acerca da razão pela qual Teresa Medeiros continuava desaparecida do mercado literário português, pois na minha opinião esta é uma autora muito semelhante a tantas outras já bastante conhecidas do panorama romântico-histórico da Regência Britânica. A nomes tão sonantes como Cheryl Holt, Lisa Kleypas, Sherry Thomas e Elizabeth Hoyt vem agora juntar-se Teresa Medeiros, que na sua carreira conta já com inúmeros livros show more publicados, os quais espero poder ler brevemente.
Dividido em duas partes, este é um romance que deixará o seu leitor cativado quase desde o início devido às situações caricatas protagonizadas pelos mediáticos irmãos Farleigh e que deixarão o pobre Sterling Harlow completamente perplexo e sem acção. Apesar do início ser um pouco mais fraco em relação ao resto do livro, gostei de toda a história, principalmente a segunda metade. Sendo o enredo principal pertencente a Laura e Sterling, conhecemos também a história de Diana e Thane, que apesar de apaixonados parecem estar separados por algo misterioso que aconteceu no passado. Fiquei muito satisfeita por no final tudo ficar resolvido e termos uma explicação credível para os acontecimentos do passado.
Agora, resta-me apenas ficar na espectativa de conhecer a história de Lottie, que apesar de ainda ser uma criança neste livro, também tem a sua própria história contada pela autora. Espero sinceramente poder ler esse livro em breve e que a Quinta Essência o publique.

A fun historical romance with an entertaining plot but some parts were pretty exaggerated and the story was so heavy with detailed descriptions that I started skimming all but dialog. Laura finds an unconscious man, kisses him awake, learns he lost his memory and tells him he is Nicholas her betrothed.

Mildly entertaining but not thoroughly memorable. This is a Regency-style Sleeping Beauty-in-reverse -- good for a quick beach read or a general sort of filler romance, but not one of the true greats.

Where have I been all these years that I'm just now reading Teresa Medeiros?! If you love historical romances written with wit and passion, if you love characters who leap from the pages straight into your heart, check out this book.
