Description
Sleeping Beauty had it easy. Her curse only made her take a nap when she turned 16. As if it wasn't bad enough already that because of her frost giant heritage from her father the king's side of the family she was 6 feet tall when she was only 12 years old, poor Princess Bronwyn (the Bold) of Argonia was, cursed at birth to tell nothing but lies. With her father away at war and her mother heavily pregnant, Bronwyn is even more in the way than usual, so she gets packed off to Wormroost, her show more aunt's place in the glaciers, and in route she meets her musician/magician cousin Carole, a not-so-brave gypsy lad, and a princess-turned-swan. The lot of them encounter monsters, sorcerers, sea serpents, mercenary mages and sirens, many of whom are, related to them. Oh. My. I think now I know that I heard the name of this author and why I did an impulse purchase of 3 books in this series. She is mentioned often in connection with Anne McCaffery, and I think I've seen her name on panels or in connection with other panelists at DragonCon.
Still, I'm going to send this book into the wild. The subject sounded like a good one: a tall girl with fighting abilities and a curse to only tell untruths is sent to a cousin's for safekeeping while her country is at war. The problem is, the interesting premise quickly goes off the rails at an attempt at farce? humor? too many plot elements?
I do love me some Terry Pratchett, who is able to frolic in his worlds. But this book and series are just not my thing and I show more definitely did not enjoy them. show less
