A very poignant series of illustrated letters sent from commander Kuribayashi to his son before the war, when he lived in the United States. The last part of the book are letters he wrote from Iwo Jima to his daughter. These illustrate the hardships Japanese soldiers had to endure against an army well outnumbering them, at Iwo Jima. Honest and often troubling. Many notes from historians help make sense of the text, written to young children.
