La parabola di Maria Antonietta, sposa per dovere politico (a un uomo che poteva essere un ottimo curato di campagna invece di un re) a soli 15 anni, ragazza sventata e mal consigliata alla Corte francese, bellissima eppure odiata per essere straniera e orgogliosa; pagherà in modo durissima la superficialità giovanile, trovando affetto e comprensione vera solo nella maternità e soprattutto nel rapporto (non platonico ma per la maggior parte del tempo epistolare) con l'uomo della vita, lo svedese Fersen.

Desconstrói o mito de Maria Antonieta, a mártir dos católicos e a rainha do que comam brioches, e a apresenta como uma pessoa medíocre. Odiada como um símbolo, por um povo que não podia odiar um rei, nem mesmo um que por vinte anos usou a coroa da França sem orgulho, honra ou dignidade, como diz o autor.
A Maria Antonieta de Zweig é humana: uma pessoa medíocre, comum, que é colocada em no ponto mais alto de uma monarquia.
Ela gasta terrivelmente, é verdade, e Zweig nos apresenta o Trianon, Ferzen , o Caso do Colar, a Rainha do Rococó.
Ela se preocupa com o povo, mas é alienada, é uma mãe atenciosa, mesmo uma esposa afetuosa, mas orgulhosa, isolada em uma corte em que é estrangeira e usada como bode espiatório. Na show more desgraça, é afetuosa com o marido indeciso, suporta tudo com dignidade, mesmo o horror da cabeça da princesa de Lamballe sendo levada à sua prisão. Seus cabelos se tornam grisalhos, seus últimos retratos a mostram vestida simplesmente, quando bate a cabeça na carruagem diz que aos guardas que não se preocupem, pois nada mais pode machucá-la, suporta às acusações de incesto.
É algo a favor de Maria Antonieta que ela, pessoa medíocre, soube ser grande em sua queda.
O livro é cheio de anedotas interessantes, como a de Goethe quando viu a tenda designada para receber Maria Antonieta. Mas a melhor de todas, pra mim, é ado Barão de Batz, famoso contrarrevolucionário, que foi à execução do rei, puxou a espada e gritou: “A mim quem quiser salvar o rei”. Una biografia genial sobre el personatge de Maria Antonieta. Zweig aconsegueix transportar-nos al bell mig de la història i incorpora un ritme trepidant i novel.lesc a alguns dels passatges més coneguts de la reina. És una obra ben documentada, que reprodueix documents originals de l'època i que posa llum en molts episodis que s'han sensacionalitzat al llarg de la història. En definitiva, una obra molt recomanable per a qualsevol que tingui interès en la França de la revolució.

Marie Antoinette, the Rococo Princess, the pride Queen, the miserable woman. Zweig's psycho-biographical novel certainly gives us an in-depth perspective of how this person could have thought back then, and how her actions commanded her own destruction, and at the same time, the foundation of a new world.
Charming and despicable, lovable and pitiful, Marie Antoinette lingers in our minds and sets an example to generations at how great moments that change the world can bless some people and curse others.
The book includes full untranslated paragraphs in French, which can be a little bit annoying at time. Also, sometimes Zweig puts too much into it: he assumes too much and makes you think that something is happening when it isn't show more actually.The writing's slightly biased, therefore, readers should have a good critical point of view in order to not be deceived by Zweig's charming writing style. However, he always sets you free to build up your opinion. Great book though, and a must if you're interested in the French revolution. show less

This is a reissue of an older book. I really enjoyed this book about Marie Antoinette. I thought reading it was a great compliment to the book I had read earlier in the year about her once she was captured and imprisoned during the revolution. I only knew the basics about her prior to reading this, and I had known nothing about her childhood and her age when she came to France to marry Louis XVI. I had already had quite a bit of sympathy for her, but reading about her life just makes me more firm in my belief that being a Princess is not something you actually want. It can be a very rough and lonely life, even though you live in a life of luxury.

Compelling biography of Marie Antoinette from her childhood through marriage, queendom to death. Original at the time for not shying away from the more prurient details of the royal marriage as previous Victorian biographies may have. Strange to recall how much closer in time the author's life was to the events described than our own, when other European upheavals would have been still keenly felt.

Una magnífica biografía de María Antonieta, en la que vemos lo que supuso en aquella época su vida llena de lujo y su despreocupación por el pueblo parisino. Cuando se quiso dar cuenta de sus errores, ya era demasiado tarde.
