I think this book is actually a fairly sophisticated evocation of the dream state! Penguin Chongo Chingi falls asleep and dreams of flying in settings both surreal and familiar. The back of the book has a quote: 'They fly in the water,' and one of the best illustrations is the double page spread of Chongo Chingi flying next to whales and schools of fish.

It's kind of beautiful, but too spare for a bedtime story, I think.

A penguin dreams all the places he can fly. The illustrations hearken to the 50s with their space-age shapes. Normally, I'd assume a dream-story would be in pastels and watercolors, but the computer animations and saturated colors of the book fit. The font is fairly spectacular as well. Lastly, the onomatopoeic words used in the illustrations throughout provide an extra layer of interest.
This book was a very simple book. It would be perfect to read aloud to a Kindergarten class but too easy for second graders. This book is about a Penguins Dream as he goes through outer space, the ocean, and the sky with the birds. It is a book filled with noises and surprises.
I would use this book in a kindergarten classroom to introduce drawing a dream they once had. Or, it could also be used to mentor writing about a dream.
This book is filled with colorful and engaging pictures perfect for the younger audience. Plus, it would be fun to read this book aloud because of all the silly noises the teacher would have to make.
The illustrations in this book are not realistic at all, possibly resembling characters in a cartoon TV show which I think kids will appreciate. I did not care for this book that much because it was a little hard to follow where the penguin was going, and the storyline was not very complex at all. This would be a good bedtime story for kids because it is about a dream the penguin is having and there is fun language in it that is appropriate for times other than at school.
Genre: Fantasy- In this book we explore the dreaming mind of a penguin named Chongo Chingi. Chongo does things that no penguin can ever do, things even humans can't do. He flies, floats in the ocean like a bubble, and travels to space. This book has many characteristics of a fantasy book with it's main character a talking penguin and because of the activities the penguin takes part in.
Style: The style of this book adds to the uniqueness of the story. Most pages only have one sentence, if there is any sentence at all on the page. Some pages only include onomatopoeias to tell what are happening on that page. Some words stand out on the page due to special fonts and size of the lettering.
Chongo Chingi has an active imagination even when he's sleeping! This is a short rhyming book which takes the reader on a creative journey into one penguins dream world. It works perfect for preschool through to 2nd grade, particularly before nap time. The unique artistic style of illustrations really make this book stand out.
First, let me say that the artwork is really cool.

The story though... it's about what you'd expect from a dream. It jumps around a lot. I like it, my nieces like it, but I can appreciate that some kids might not get it. That's cool.

Very short, as well. If your kid gets into it, that means it's great for hurried bedtimes.
