Owen Slaughter returns from the battlefields of Europe to Eden, Mississippi, to keep a promise made to the dying Charlie Coltrain. Charlie's sister, Willie, is overjoyed that Owen is alive, but devastated that he doesn't remember their love for one another. When Owen decides to leave to find himself she puts their fate in the hands of God.
