Description
Just after radio journalist Michela Canova finds out that her neighbour, Angela, has been murdered, she is asked to prepare a radio series on crimes against women. Researching the programmes, Michela is forced to confront the horror and violence of big city life. Did Angela drive her many admirers to the very limit of sexual frenzy until one of them exploded? And why does Michela see the same pattern of incitement and repulsion repeat itself in her own relationships? Dacia Maraini asks a show more fundamental question about the human condition: how can individuals escape patterns of domination, that are in place the world over? Her sophisticated answers show why Maraini is one of Europe's outstanding voices. show lessTags

VOICES is a murder mystery set in Italy. The story opens with the main character, Michela, returning home to discover her neighbor had been murdered the week before. Her landlady is cleaning up the apartment and fills her in on the details of the murder. The book is filled with descriptions and at the end of the story the reader is still uncertain as to who really committed the murder as you have two surprising suspects.
I am not sure what I thought of this story. To me, I felt as if I was reading portions of different stories placed together to make a mystery. At times, I felt the story was attempting to be some sort of literary classic with all the descriptors and self reflection on the page. Then later it was as if the story would show more change course and I was once again reading a mystery, while at other times I felt I was reading an assignment for a creative writing course.
This story, to me, is filled with extraneous material that has nothing to do with the mystery itself. The self reflection, the turtle crossing the road, the cat lady could have been left completely without affecting the mystery. On the other hand though, I felt that the ending with the two options for the killer is new and different from mysteries I've read. show less

The Florentine Maraini published her first novel, "La Vacanza" (The Holiday), which treats the theme of contemporary female sexuality, in 1962. The next year, she was awarded the Formentor Prize for the novel "L'Era del Malessere" (The Age of Malaise). Later in the decade, she moved almost exclusively to theater, establishing the Teatro di show more Centocelle in Rome in 1969. Though she resumed prose writing, and also has published numerous collections of poetry, she is best known as one of the most important voices in contemporary Italian theater, a writer, director, and producer. In all of her works, Maraini's protaganists are women, often in conflict with men, who are seeking female solidarity. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
