The Rainbow Hand is a collection of poems about mothers and their children. Some of the poems are told from the child's perspective, while some are from the mother's. The structure of the poems vary. A few rhyme, some are short and choppy while others are longer and more detailed. However, all of them do have one thing in common by illustrating the different aspects of a mother's love for her children. ( )

I really enjoyed these poems about mothers. I agree with the author in her forward message about how she did not appreciate all her mother had done for her until she recently became a mother. Although I am not a mother yet, since I have gotten older, I see all that my mother sacrifices and does for me and my family. Some of these poems touched my heart because I could relate them back to when I was younger. Other poems, especially "Crazy Mother," I had a hard time understanding. Overall, I enjoyed the different tones and styles of each poem. ( )

This book of poems includes a lovely collection about the special relationship between mothers and children. The book skillfully acknowledges the ups and downs while emphasizing how in the long run even moments you are annoyed by your mother are important and should be cherished. It is a book with which I believe anyone with a loving and caring maternal figure can relate. The poems aren't just in the point of view of the child, though. Poems expressing the mother's perspective are included, giving younger readers a chance to see what their own mothers might be going through. The fact that it is written by an American women of Korean and Chinese decent helps people understand even more how we are all alike. ( )

The Rainbow Hand includes poems about mothers and children. It expresses the importance of spending time with your mother because there might come a day when she is not around anymore. Some poems talk about accepting and loving your mother's flaws, like her white and grey hairs. It talks about listening to your mother because there might be a day when you walk into the woods and see poison oak. One poem talks about a mom using her apron as a rag, so her child with a runny nose could resume running and playing. It talks about Mother's Day and how any simple gift you give your mom, even if it is a clove of garlic and a rock, she will love it and think it is the best gift ever. Using mostly black scratches and minimal bright colors in the illustrations, the pictures help set the mood of the poems. A nice read to realize all the little things a mother does throughout her life. ( )
