Description
When a recent skeleton among ancient bones raises questions—and danger—forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan is the only one who can solve the case in this "triumphant second appearance" (Publishers Weekly) from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs.Tempe Brennan is stuck teaching an archaeology field school for students at UNCC in Charleston, South Carolina.
When she stumbles upon a recent skeleton among the ancient bones, she starts asking questions. She's the expert show more they might have called in, but lucky for the police she's already there. The skeleton leads her to a free street clinic where patients have begun to go missing, and some have wound up dead. What is going on and who is to blame? The charismatic televangelist who oversees the clinic? The shady doctor who practices there? Or is it the clinic staff?
Ryan is in Montreal, though he may come down for a visit. If he does, Tempe will have to juggle him and Detective Galiano, an old flame, who is in town investigating the disappearance of a wealthy young woman. This is a phenomenally high stakes business where one dead body can save a couple of lives, maybe more. Along with the corpses, Tempe investigates the sick moral logic of the mastermind behind the operation.
Kathy Reichs has returned Tempe to America and put her in the middle of a sinister trafficking ring that's local and global. The suspense is intense, and the world is riveting. Kathy Reichs's books are expert and smart with a taut energy, and this is her best plot and writing yet. show less

I love Kathy Reichs and this book made me love her even more! The second novel in the Temperance Brennan series followed a sort of cult or Amish-like group. With numerous girls disappearing, Tempe must solve the murders and find the killers!
This book did not disappoint me at all! It had lots of action, twists and turns I didn't see coming, mystery, romance and a wild adventure. Seeing more of Agent Andrew Ryan made me very happy, and even seeing the cat Birdie make more of an appearance made my heart grow.
There isn't anything I would ask Kathy Reichs for. I could pick this book apart for how frustrated I was when I didn't see the twists coming, but that means she did a spectacular job. I'm lucky I have the next novel on hand because I show more am addicted to this woman's work!
Five out of five stars. Amazing crime/mystery/action novel with lots of suspense and mystery, but at the same time the ending ties up all loose ends. Forensic perfection in one novel! show less

I love this series. As much as I love the TV show Bones, the books are entirely different -- and I appreciate them both for various reasons. Tempe is much more socially adept in the books, with an extended circle of family and friends. But it's her forensic anthropologist skills that really shine in both mediums.
This book hooked me from page one. I loved seeing Tempe in her element, and I particularly appreciated the Montreal setting. I remember the ice storm mentioned in this novel, and it brought back some memories I'd thought long buried.
While I found Reichs' insistence on sharing every bit of her research with us (especially around the monkeys!) a little dull, I appreciated her precision and the vivid word pictures she painted. The show more plot kept me guessing until the end, and I enjoyed turning the last page feeling satisfied. No cliff ender here! I'm looking forward to the next instalment. show less

Ms. Reichs has done it again! I stayed awake late with twitching eyes finishing this, it was that compelling. She found a way to make the cult as murder suspect angle fresh. I had no idea who the big kahuna was until the very end pages.
I kept expecting slightly more resolution than I got though. This was only her second book though. I'm used to the stronger resolutions of her later work.

This is the second in the Temperance Brennan series, and the second Kathy Reichs book I've read. This is definitely going to be a series I carry on with.
As before, Tempe is a realistic professional woman: her love-life isn't great, but it's not some kind of disaster-zone either; she has decent relationships with co-workers without unrealistic drama; her relationship with her daughter is pretty normal. It's such a relief to read about a woman who isn't, despite being some kind of gun-toting, wisecracking superhero, strangely needy and incompetent in the daily tasks of life.
I like Tempe: she's so normal.
This time, Tempe is dealing with the aftermath of an arson attack, with a side-plot examining the bones of a nineteenth-century nun. show more Naturally, neither of these cases is entirely straightforward.
As before, we get useful forensic information as various corpses are examined - I always like the technical detail. :-) As before, there's a personal element, which the reader can see coming a mile off.
All in all, a fast-paced murder-mystery, which I read pretty much in one sitting. On to the next... :-) show less

I love these books, but not for the reasons I wish I would. Tempe is kind of overly predictable...and whenever a family member of hers is mentioned or a friend is mentioned...they tend to get themselves in peril which causes Tempe to delve even deeper into the case when I honestly don't know that she needs any motivation outside looking for the killer. What I do love are the cases themselves, the way things are built together and play out. I love the glimpse into Forensic Anthropology. I'm already reading the next one. It's a good series.
A disappointment. Reichs' Tempe Brennan series is generally a winner, but this one, with its mysterious international cult background as villains, stretches coincidence far past the breaking point and ultimately depends on the most unlikely bits of blind luck to reach its resolution.
A book that completely grabbed me from page 1. I liked it a lot better than the series that have been made about Dr. Brennan. I even kept reading will into the night, although I know I shouldn't....
Detailed, at times too much for my liking, but it certainly set off my in-head-movie.
Not too predictable, it kept me guessing, going at around the same pace as Brennan did.
This book has been sitting on my shelf way too long, but now it will soon resume its travels.
